A&M-Kingsville player to challenge record
Martinez needs 77 3-point goals next season in order to break NCAA Division II record
From staff and correspondent reports
KINGSVILLE - Texas A&M-Kingsville guard Lorie Martinez will be setting her sights on a national record when the 2000-2001 women's basketball season commences.
Martinez, a junior from Incarnate Word Academy, needs 77 3-point goals in her senior season to equal the NCAA Division II career 3-point record. Martinez will enter her final season with 288 3-pointers. The Division II record is 365, set by Amy Coon of Clarion (Pa.) in 1991-94.
The fewest 3-pointers Martinez has made in a season thus far has been 89, and that came as a sophomore.
Martinez already holds three Lone Star Conference records and six school marks.
She has set conference record for most career 3-point goals made (288); most 3-pointers in a season (104, 1997-98); and most 3s made per game in a season (4.0, 1997-98).
Martinez had 95 3-point goals in the season just completed, and she captured her third consecutive LSC statistical title for most 3-point goals made and most 3-point goals made per game.

Gutierrez fanning foes
at record-setting pace
KINGSVILLE - Texas A&M-Kingsville pitcher Maria Gutierrez is getting her name in the Lone Star Conference and school record books with her strikeouts this spring.
A sophomore from Pearland, Gutierrez has 141 strikeouts in the 23 games in which she has appeared. Her average of 9.35 strikeouts per game is leading the LSC by more three strikeouts a game.
She broke the LSC, and school, single-game records recently with 17 strikeouts against Western New Mexico. That erased the conference record 13 set by Heather Southard of Tarleton State in 1997 and equalled by Deanna Melson of Central Oklahoma in 1998.
It also broke the school mark of 12 set by Gutierrez earlier this season.
Her 141 total for the season is closing on the LSC, and school, records of 191, set by Gutierrez last spring.
In her two seasons with the Javelinas, she has 332 strikeouts. Gutierrez has at least 20 games remaining this season, and if she continues her current average, she will have more than 320 strikeouts.
Javelinas add 11th game to 2000 football schedule
KINGSVILLE - Texas A&M-Kingsville has added an 11th game to its 2000 schedule, and it will come Aug. 31 when the Javelinas meet North Dakota State in the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D.
It will mark the third time in five years that the Javelinas have opened in Fargo, and the Bison have won the two previous engagements. The earlier games came in 1996 and 1998.
NDSU becomes the second non-conference game for the Javelinas. The Javelinas have a Sept. 23 matchup with Sam Houston in Huntsville.
The remaining nine games are against Lone Star Conference schools, and three are crossover opponents from the North Division.
The home opener will come Sept. 9 against Southwestern Oklahoma.
